Traction Power SCADA

Traction Power SCADA

Traction Power SCADA is a fully integrated solution for communication, interfacing, monitoring, controlling and managing realtime SCADA systems. The object-oriented nature makes the system a robust, configurable, flexible and scalable product.

At the core of Traction Power SCADA is Panorama E2 which is a proven SCADA application with interfaces to a range of PLCs (such as Mitsubishi, Siemens, ABB, Allen Bradley, Bosch, Cisco, Hirschmann, etc.) using open source communication protocols such as DNP3 Serial and Ethernet, SNMP, OPC, different variants of Modbus and U-Con (User-Configurable).

Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The GUI is designed to represent the required functionality whilst optimising user interaction with the Electrification Plant Equipment. User interaction to Traction Power SCADA is enhanced by a simple navigation structure. This includes navigation for control, monitoring and managing the entire plant. The GUI design of the plant elements are designed to client preference, relevant specification(s) and mandatory standards.

Distributed Management System (DMS)
The Distributed Management System (DMS) has the following functionality:

iCMS

Integrated Communication Management Systems

SELLA CONTROLS, using its 40 years’ experience as a system integrator delivering safety critical control applications, has developed a solution that enables rail operators to centrally control all of its operational and retail telecommunication assets. Using proven ‘COTS’ software technologies, SELLA CONTROLS has designed a solution capable of providing a simple and effective common point of control via a fully integrated human computer interface (HCI).

Utilizing industry proven SCADA software and hardware, SELLA CONTROLS has developed its ‘integrated Communication Management System’ (iCMS) toolset. Designed to meet the requirements of numerous applications, the solution is based on a client server architecture allowing multi user capability. System integrity is maintained by the use of a dual redundant RAID server architecture. The HCI user interface has been designed in line with well-known industry standards to provide a flexible and fully configurable application. This ensures that the final solution will meet the necessary human factors requirement of a modern operational control point.

iCMS Technologies
The iCMS solution has been developed with the use of industry proven software and hardware technologies. The iCMS application utilizes a ‘COTS’ software toolset, developed for a variety of industrial SCADA applications. Already in operation in the UK rail industry, the software product has been supplied for the integration of retail telecommunications assets.

To enhance its solution for operational communications, SELLA CONTROLS has integrated its iCMS product with the DIKOS suite of rail telecommunication products. This provides effective control, routing and management of all operational telephony such as SPT, TT and PABX applications. The development of iCMS has been achieved by SELLA CONTROLS through utilization of proven market technologies, existing product partnerships and our experience in the delivery of integrated safety critical and control applications.

iCMS for Line Management
Line control rooms or Service Control Centres (SCC) also feature several operational communication systems. Typically, a line controller may have four or five communications assets to manage as well as dealing with the safe operation of the signalling system. Quick, effective and correct operation of these assets is essential to providing a good safe service.

For SCC applications, SELLA CONTROLS limits integration to the communication systems. Adapted to meet the requirements for the line management, SELLA CONTROLS utilizes its iCMS solution for the common point of control for all operational communication systems. The flexibility of the HCI design means that the iCMS solution, even though supplied as a separate system, can be engineered so that its appearance is similar or identical to that of the signalling system. This approach of commonality reduces the level of training required by personnel as mimic layouts, alarm and event regimes and menus are familiar.

iCMS for Station Management
Typically rail stations and large transport interchanges are supplied with a variety of telecommunication systems. The approach from SELLA CONTROLS to this environment is to utilize its iCMS application to provide a single point of control for all existing and new communications infrastructure.

Operators are presented with the direct control of station communications equipment via a touch screen HCI workstation. Simple station area maps are populated with active icons that respond to a strict alarm and event regime when an asset becomes active. These are controlled via dedicated operational menus for each sub system.

SISS

Station Information and Security Systems

SELLA CONTROLS, drawing on 40 years’ experience in rail telecommunications and automation, has developed a proven cost effective approach for the delivery of Station Information and Security Systems (SISS). Using proven ‘COTS’ and industry approved technologies, SELLA CONTROLS can offer a complete turnkey solution for both new and redevelopment schemes.

This turnkey service covers a complete end to end project lifecycle for SISS telecommunications projects starting with consultancy, through detailed design, build and final installation and commissioning. Expertise gained through previous projects has provided SELLA CONTROLS with the skills to manage all aspects of station telecommunications modernization, including the interface to all stakeholders. This includes liaising with local councils, Network Rail and English Heritage.

SELLA CONTROLS has an extensive client list for this type of project and an in depth knowledge of the processes required to achieve a satisfactory completion. We have the full capability in our in house engineering team to produce designs to GRIP and RIBA to meet the requirements of the market. Our clients include Network Rail, London Underground and a growing number of train operating companies. To date we have carried out SISS works at over 80 stations across the UK.

SISS Technologies
When approaching the design of SISS applications SELLA CONTROLS always considers the technologies already in use by the managing train operator. We understand the need to keep maintenance costs to a minimum and the consolidation of technologies is essential to this process.

Technology decisions are driven by this, but also industry approvals and the performance of our own strict vendor appraisal process ensuring that only the most cost effective products are supplied. As well as our own proven Customer Information System (CIS) we also implement third party CIS system enhancements and technologies. This is complemented by the addition of CIS Displays, Closed Circuit Television, Long Line Public Address, Induction Loops and Passenger Help Point technologies.

Station Telecommunications
SELLA CONTROLS’ dedicated rail infrastructure project team has extensive experience and detailed knowledge of the delivery of station telecommunication renewals. Our design capability has the necessary skills to deliver detailed designs to satisfy key clients such as Network Rail, London Underground and ATOC. These skills include a detailed understanding of industry recognized processes such as GRIP and RIBA.

Our approach to these projects is to deliver the most cost effective solution for the location. Care is taken during design to ensure that the final solution satisfies the surrounding environment. Product placement, product types, heritage requirements and noise pollution all need to be considered when undertaking a station design.

RCMS

Remote Conditioning Monitoring Systems

As a rail network expands and the capacity for track access increases, the performance and reliability of infrastructure is critical. As a result rail operators are focusing more on the monitoring of key assets. These assets are a significant feature of the network and plan a vital role in the safe operation of the railway.

Covering applications such as signalling, structures and environmental conditions, it is essential these assets are available 24/7 365 days a year.

SELLA CONTROLS’ approach to Remote Condition Monitoring (RCM) provides an alternative mid-way approach to asset monitoring. Based on sound engineering principles of modularity, flexibility and expansion plus the use of proven COTS based technologies, SELLA CONTROLS is able to deliver a cost effective solution to network operators and maintainers.

The use of COTS technologies provide SELLA CONTROLS with a range of proven products that can be integrated into a variety of applications providing operators and maintainers with a consolidated view of their assets.

Network Management Systems

SELLA CONTROLS’ approach to supplying a Network Management System (NMS) is to provide Rail Network Operators with advanced tools to analyze, plan, test, execute, monitor and manage the electrical network. Facilities include the scheduling and organization of maintenance works, electrical isolations and changes in feeding arrangements.

Using the open architecture, power and flexibility of TLSCADA and SELLA CONTROLS’ approach to providing NMS software, we can implement scalable systems containing significant advances in total integration, providing the user with facilities for:

  • Network Management Information System

  • Incident Analysis
  • Operational analysis for performance monitoring and forecasting
  • Intranet/internet links for direct transfer of information within the organization and to external service suppliers
  • Management and integration of extended infrastructure documentation throughout the organization

The NMS can be supplied as a standalone application or fully integrated with SELLA CONTROLS’ latest advanced control software solution, TLSCADA, which provides the traditional front line control and monitoring of the electrical traction supplies.

The NMS contains a model of the live electrical network, within which is modelled each circuit breaker, manual switch, bus bar, wire and electrical subsection. Rules are configured within the model, for example to test for illegal feeding arrangements and to detect feeding irregularities. In addition, each Operator has their own model that allows independent testing of isolations and changes in feeding. Typical functional capabilities are:

Analysis of the Network
Using detailed operational data from the live system, long term logging in the NMS Event Log provides enhanced analysis and reporting capability for both Operators and Maintainers. The database allows at least the last year’s events to be accessible online for analysis and report generation. Operators can define their own analysis criteria, or can select from a range of predefined reports that include diverse subjects such as communications availability and circuit breaker trip analysis. All report and analysis results are directed automatically into word-processed documents for future distribution and collation.

Planning Isolations
Operators can plan isolations, based upon the standard rules and procedures, and verify these isolations against either the current state of the network or the default standard state of the network.

The NMS automatically determines which circuit breakers and manual switches are required to effect the isolation of selected subsections. The Operators can modify the isolation details if required, for example if the current electrical feeding is such that the standard rules for isolation are ineffective.

Once verified and tested on the model, an isolation can be saved for future use and can be scheduled to occur over a particular time interval. Further testing ensures that concurrent or consecutive isolations do not interact in a detrimental manner. Operational information can be included, such as the nominated person, main contractor and agreed earthing points. Standard forms are generated automatically and inserted into the document management system, dynamically creating the necessary document structure and hyperlinks.

Workflow can be aided by automatic routing of verified isolation documents to authorities for approval/modification, with a strict versioning mechanism applied.

Condition Monitoring
Long term recording of plant operation and a database of plant parameters enable the condition of plant to be monitored and preventative maintenance to be planned in advance with appropriate timing. Integration with intelligent third-party systems allows access to additional detailed plant information such as the calculated distance to a fault.

Document Management
The fully integrated document management system provides Operators with instant hyperlink access to both drawings and the automatically generated isolation forms. All isolation diagrams, isolation instructions, feeding diagrams and control room instructions are maintained within a Document Management system. The addition of geographic data, maintenance instructions and pictures enables complete maintenance information to be passed to personnel of proven capability, with the option of internet access.

Axle Counting Systems

Axle Counting Systems

Train detection system UTR / ITR is based on the detection of train wheels by the rail wheel sensor ZK24-2, transmission of the wheel pulses via the 4-wire transmission line, and evaluation of the wheel pulses in relay interface unit UTR245 / ITR245 with safety relay or transistor outputs.

The detection system is used for switching on (system UTR) and switching off (system ITR) the level crossing and for any other signalling safety system that requires the train detection.

Train detection system UTR consists of the rail wheel sensor ZK24-2 and the relay interface unit UTR245. Train detection system ITR consists of the same rail wheel sensor ZK24-2 and the relay interface unit ITR245.
