MAETP Hunterston A - Combined Safety and Control Systems

Application: Combined Safety and Control Systems
Installation Area: Hunterston A Nuclear Power Station, West Kilbride, Scotland
Client: Costain Oil, Gas & Process Ltd

SELLA CONTROLS was awarded a contract to supply a combined Emergency Shutdown, Fire and Gas Detection System and PLC Control System to Costain Oil, Gas & Process Ltd in the UK. The Emergency Shutdown and Fire and Gas Detection comprise of HIMA HIQuad H51q programmable technology and are for incorporation onto the BNG Modular Active Effluent Treatment Project (MAETP) at the Hunterston A Power Station in West Kilbride, Scotland.

Both systems utilise simplex I/O configuration meeting Safety Integrity Level (SIL) 3, in accordance with the guidelines and procedures stipulated in IEC-61508. The Fire and Gas Detection System has been designed for maximum integrity and reliability by utilising an addressable ADT MX system, which interfaces with the existing system on site. The fire alarm system will be mounted in the combined panel, with an InTouch based HMI providing the operator workstation.

Diamond Light Source - Insertion Device Control

SELLA CONTROLS was awarded a contract for the provision of a Production Insertion Device Control, by Diamond Light Source Limited, Didcot, UK.

SELLA CONTROLS will also connect each control system to the appropriate ID structure in the Diamond Assembly building. Included too, is the fixing of junction boxes and motion stop buttons to ID structure and termination of all cables to structure-mounted components. Initial testing of system functionality, detailed manufacturing, test and QA documentation are all also part of the contract.

Diamond Light Source is a new synchrotron being built next to the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire and is the largest investment in the UK for 30 years. It will produce ultra-violet, infra-red and X-ray beams of exceptional brightness, allowing pioneering experiments to be carried out which probe deep into the basic structure of matter and materials. The facility will comprise a 3 GeV electron storage ring, injected from a 100 MeV linac through a full energy booster synchrotron, and an initial complement of seven experimental stations. The synchrotron radiation for the first seven beamlines is to be produced by insertion devices.

Sizewell A - Fuel Rod Control

In 2002, SELLA CONTROLS worked with BNFL Magnox with whom we implemented a suite of control systems to oversee the safe operation of the fuel rods in the Sizewell A Reactor.

Our panels replace an older electro-mechanical system which utilised a solid state frequency generator. We met the strict standards which are inherent to the nuclear industry in addition to achieving a high level of EMC performance.
Other projects we have undertaken with BNFL in recent years include radio remote control systems for nuclear flask handling cranes and various types of process control panels at the Sellafield, Risley, Thorp and Springfield and Capenhurst sites.

Hartlepool and Heysham - Voting Logic Panels, Nuclear Industry

Application: Voting Logic Panels
Installation Area: Hartlepool and Heysham 1, UK
Client: AMEC

SELLA CONTROLS was awarded a contract by AMEC to supply 4 Voting Logic Panels for use at Hartlepool and Heysham 1 power stations. Two Voting Logic Panels were supplied to each of the power stations.

The panels monitor critical flooding levels in specific situations and show status indications. They automatically shut down the appropriate pumps in the event of pre set flooding levels being reached. Based on 2oo3 logic, the panels are custom designed by SELLA CONTROLS to fit a “Maximum Envelope” based on a compartmentalised design to allow some sections to work independently, whilst other sections are in maintenance or commissioning modes. In order to allow thorough proving of the design, SELLA CONTROLS produced a custom test rig with some actual plant level sensors connected to the inputs, testing all paths through the logic.
